The majority of of us have undertaken some interior painting at some point in our lives. You make certain to tape all of the edges and take a crack at covering everything you can. However it would seem despite how hard you might try to keep the paint on the walls some will inevitably wind up on the carpet.
So what do you do when this happens? Well your first instinct would probably be to grab a towel and attacking the area. Half of that is correct. You do want to address the area as soon as possible. Paint dries in your carpet the same way it dries on walls. So the longer you leave it the harder it’s going to be to get out. What you don’t want to do is to grab a towel and start rubbing at the spill. This is actually the one thing you should never do.
For people with a shop vac the first thing you should do is utilize it to extract as much of the paint from the carpeting as is possible. This will make the actual clean up a lot easier. Do not rub the head of the vac into the paint. Just place it on the spot and let the vac do the work.
If you do not have a shop vac then you can just place some towels over the area and let the paint absorb into them. The point is to remove as much of the paint as possible to make the clean up easier.
Another method prior to extraction is to apply a paint remover created for carpet first. This can help thin out the paint a bit and permit the shop vac to remove more of the paint than it would if it had been thicker. If you opt to go this particular route just make sure to abide by the suggestions for the paint cleaner and remember to rinse the carpet with water right after using it.
After you’ve extracted what you can you can begin the actual stain removal process. Use the paint remover, a gentle brush, and a towel. Apply the paint remover to the towel and blot at the area. Use the brush to work the paint remover into the stain. If you are using a chemical like paint thinner you can skip the brush and just blot with a towel.
Apply the paint remover, brush/blot, rinse with water, extract. Repeat these steps as necessary until the stain is gone. It is better to only apply a small amount of cleaner at a time and to repeat the process numerous times. Applying too much paint remover or thinner at once can cause damage to your carpet.
Paint in carpet can be a tricky ordeal but it’s not a no win situation. The key is to act fast. The sooner you get to the area and treat it the more likely you will be able to remove the paint completely.
