Have you ever wondered what goes on in offices, school buildings and factories after hours? You leave work at five PM every day, if you are fortunate, lock the door and in the morning when you come back the floors have been cleaned, the rubbish has been taken out, chairs have been straightened and it seems like someone has been dusting. For a second you think office fairy, but quickly remember the office commercial cleaners you employed.
When I was younger I worked as a janitorial night corporate cleaner. The money was good and the hours permitted me to do whatever I wanted throughout the day. So long as the office cleaning was finished and the carpets vacuumed I could take as much time as I wanted. The odd snooze and beer were not out of the question. Bowling with office chairs across the carpet, sniffing cleaner products and other office cleaner supplies occasionally crossed my mind but in reality never happened. I knew commercial cleaning was a summer job not a career so I did not take it too seriously.
Now that I run a business and hire commercial cleaning contractors I can just imagine the type of work that goes into cleaning my office. I usually won’t have to stress as less and less younger lads are contracted and more often illegal workers are contracted who may consider cleaning a long term career. Even so, every once in a while I take a look at the carpet and wonder if the night before it truly had carpet cleaners or steam cleaners working on it. This idea is more of a fond memory and not a complaint.
I have seen the distance commercial cleaners have come and the difficult work they do. The competitions hard and the workers work conscientiously because they’ve a family at home to feed and cannot stand to lose their job.
All I can say now is that I am glad I am not still working as a night cleaner.
